FAQ

Everything you wanted to know about ghostwriting, editing, and publishing but were afraid to ask.

Who retains copyright/royalties for my book?

“Ghostwriting” is called that for a reason: the ghostwriter remains invisible. Your name will appear as the author on the cover and you retain 100% of rights and royalties for the project.

How long does it take to ghostwrite a book? How does the process work?

A 45,000-word book (around 150 pages) will take 4-6 months from start to completion and requires minimal time on your part (usually around 20 hours). Most of the content for the book will be derived from interviews between the author and ghostwriter; about 1 hour per chapter. Three to four chapter interviews per month is a good benchmark.

Ghostwriting includes revisions and editing so of course you’ll have a chance to give feedback on chapter drafts to make sure we’re getting the voice, style, and content right. The book isn’t published until you’re satisfied.

How much does ghostwriting cost?

A typical 45,000-word book (150-175 pages) costs $32,000.

How do I market my book once it's published?

We offer marketing packages that include:

– book launch strategy

– platform building

– SEO sales copywriting

– sales-boosting AMS keywords and ad setup

Do you have writing samples to show me?

Of course. Various samples are available upon request. Just visit our contact page.

What exactly does editing entail?

There are several types of editing, often loosely defined, which is the challenge of hiring an editor.
Developmental editing includes a manuscript critique/editorial letter of 8-12 pages (depending on manuscript length) along with comments in the manuscript itself.

Content editing includes help with style, structure, plot and character (if fiction or memoir), logical integrity, flow, organization, and all the other substantive elements PLUS copy editing (so you don’t need to pay for both content editing and copy editing).

Can you guarantee my book will be a best-seller?

No. No one can guarantee that. No writer no matter how good they are can even guarantee a manuscript will be picked up by a publisher. The hard truth is that very few books will ever land a book deal. The silver lining is that self-publishing provides a way to bypass the traditional gatekeepers of the industry. The main drawback of self-publishing is that you must shoulder most of the burden of marketing – but these days, even publishing houses are foisting that burden onto their authors.

Who makes a good candidate for hiring a ghostwriter?

1. You don’t have endless free time. Writing and editing is a very labor-intensive process and if you’ve never written a book before it will (like most things in life!) likely take much longer and be more difficult than you expected.

2. You have a clear, concrete idea, preferably one that is original (hasn’t been written about a thousand times).

3. You are not a professional writer. People dramatically overestimate their abilities with the written word, and underestimate the complexity and intellectual labor involved in writing a full-length book. Book writing, like most things of value, is better left to the professionals.

Shoud I self-publish and or go through a traditional publisher?

Check out our blog article on this very topic.

Why should I hire you?

Oceanside is a young company, but I’ve been in the business for 15 years as an editor with a Big 4 publishing house, a freelance editor who has worked on every conceivable type of writing for a staggering variety of clients, an in-house ghostwriter for other publishing companies, and an independent ghostwriter of business books and memoirs. Two of my projects have ranked in the top ten on the Amazon best-seller list. One client landed a CEO job after publishing his book. I know my stuff and I’m easy to work with. See the testimonials on the Services page for feedback from satisfied clients.

I'm interested in ghostwriting but I'm not sure I want to commit to the whole book. Do you do sample chapters?

Of course! We can do a “test drive” of the first chapter or two for $1500 per chapter.
